Can being a member advance my career?
Yes. Our ability to promote improvements and equity, and collaborate with management over changes that impact your work, is influenced by the number of colleagues willing to join their union. Simply put, the more members we have, the more resources and impact we have as a group in the eyes of managers and legislators, which benefits you and your career.

How much involvement is required as a member?
As much or little as you want. Some members take on leadership roles, act as mentors, conduct research, and serve on committees. The volunteers who to take up these duties are critical in running our union, but we also understand not all members have the time, energy, or interest to do so. Simply becoming a member is more than enough to show your support and interest. All we ask is that our members try their best to stay informed by reading emails, responding to surveys, and attending (in-person or teleconference) our annual meeting.

How are my dues used?
As with any member-driven, non-profit organization, we need funds to carry out our goals. Our main source of funding is through membership dues. Dues are used to provide training, insurance, supplies, and most importantly, provide us with independent legal counsel. It should be noted that dues money does not go to politicians or political parties. We are a non-partisan organization.

How does membership benefit the U.S. Navy?
Our goal is to continue to see the U.S. Navy as a positive institution for those in military service and the American people. It is in our interest to advocate for improvements and accountable in the service and products we make, repair, and upgrade for military readiness. Our union provides the autonomy and the protections to voice our ideas and concerns to Command and Legislators without fear of reprisal.

What are other benefits of membership?
The IFPTE is actively involved and aware of the many issues facing federal employees, and routinely advocates with government officials on issues concern us. Local 1 elected officials will sometimes go up to DC on important issues to speak directly with Legislators and government leaders as well with IFPTE support. None of this would not be possible with members.
As an affiliated of the IFPTE, our members can access Union Plus benefits, and apply for IFPTE's annual scholarship. To learn more, check on IFPTE's website.
